Dried fish sales good due to purchases for Thingyan

Housewives have stocked up their pantries with dried fish for consuming during Thingyan and for giving present, so dried fish sales have mounted this month, according to dried fish shops.

“Typically, housewives consider first dried fish and dried shrimp when they buy dried foods for emergency. Thingyan is coming next month so some housewives have now started stocked dried fishes to eat in Thingyan. Some buy dried fishes and other dried foods for giving present when they go back to their natives where those foods are rare” said a fish paste and dried fishes shop owner.

Commodity prices always get high when Thingyan gets close, that is why she went to Nyaungpinlay Market a few days ago and bought dried foods, said a housewife.

“I already bought dried fishes, dried shrimp and other dried foods to eat during Thingyan. Dried nganitu fish is K27000. Price differs depending on quality. I’m worried that price may get higher when holidays near, that is why I’ve already bought,” she said.

According to prices at Bayintnaung wholesale commodity trading centre on 19 March, Pyapon dried shrimp (premium) is between K85000 and K100,000 per viss, Pyapon dried shrimp (normal) is between K70000 and K75000 per viss, Pyapon dried shrimp (big-sized and special) is between K60000 and K70000, Pyapon dried shrimp (small-sized and special) is between K40000 and K50000, Pyapon dried shrimp (small-sized and normal) is between K25000 and K35000.

Price of Rakhine dried shrimp is K50000 and K80000 per viss, while price of freshwater dried fishes is between K35000 and K75000 per viss and price of saltwater dried fishes is between K4000 and K45000 per viss.
