11 factories produce 8 million tonnes of cement annually

Eleven cement factories produce over eight million tonnes of cement annually, according to U Than Zaw Htay, Managing Director of No 1 Heavy Industries Enterprise and No 2 Heavy Industries Enterprise under the Ministry of Industry.
The private sector operates 16 cement factories, while the State oversees three. If all factories are operational, they can collectively produce over 16 million tonnes of cement. Annual local consumption stands at approximately 10-11 million tonnes. U Than Zaw Htay stated, “We can meet two-thirds of the local demand. No 33 Heavy Industry (Kyaukse) currently manufactures 5,000 tonnes per day, totalling 1.8 million tonnes in the last financial year 2023-24. Annually, it provides 70,000 tonnes of cement for State infrastructure projects. Additionally, we’re collaborating with the private sector to manage Heavy Industry 31 (Thayet) and Heavy Industry 32 (Kyangin).”
The factories employ the dry process, known for its superior energy efficiency compared to the wet process. Laboratories are established to assess the quality of both local cements and imports. — ASH/NT
