Agriculture Dept completes over 149,700 sowing acres of sugarcane in Sagaing Region

Sagaing Region Agriculture Department implemented 149,774 acres of sugarcane cultivation in the region this year, said U Win Hlaing Oo, head of the region department.
During the 2020-2021 growing season, Sagaing Region Agriculture Department targeted 170,200 acreage of sugarcane in the region.
The department commenced sugarcane cultivation in December 2020 and 149,774 acres have been planted so far, the region department’s data showed.
“The sugarcane cultivation is primarily found in Katha, Htigyaing and Kanbalu areas. The growers in Katha and Htigyaing conduct commercial farming for the sugar mills. The growers discuss with the millers to boost production and meet the demand. They also utilize high yielding variety in farming. The sugar mills also provide financial assistance or make a deposit or advance payment,” said U Win Hlaing Oo, head of the region department.
“The sugarcane cultivation costs approximately K600,000-700,000 per acre. The sugar millers from Htigyaing and Kanbalu townships purchases the sugarcane.
‘‘The residents also buy them to make sugarcane jaggery. Meanwhile, the growers from Ayadaw township of Monywa District prioritizes sugarcane juice,” said Daw Moe Hmi Tin, deputy head of the region department.
Sagaing Region Agriculture Department mostly utilizes high yielding varieties such as K-95/84, Nawaay-4, Phawmozar and Sinshweli. – Lu Lay/GNLM
