Benefit Myanmar society with cooperative movements

Cooperative measures play a significant role in benefiting Myanmar society and promoting sustainable development. The International Day of Cooperatives, observed on the first Saturday of July each year, highlights the importance of cooperatives as partners for accelerated sustainable development. This year, it marks the 29th International Day of Cooperatives recognized by the United Nations and the 101st International Cooperative Day.
Cooperatives are characterized as autonomous associations of individuals who voluntarily come together to fulfill their common economic, social, and cultural needs. These enterprises are jointly owned and democratically controlled, with the aim of improving the lives of their members. The United Nations recognizes and emphasizes the role of cooperatives in economic, social, and cultural development, as well as their contribution to achieving social policy objectives.
The International Day of Cooperatives seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of cooperatives. It highlights the cooperative movement’s contributions to addressing major global challenges and the importance of fostering partnerships between cooperatives and other actors.
In Myanmar, the government recognizes the potential of cooperative movements in enhancing the socioeconomic conditions of its people, particularly those in rural areas. By promoting cooperative initiatives, the government aims to empower rural communities and uplift their livelihoods. Through cooperative efforts in various sectors such as agriculture, livestock breeding, fishery, and small-scale industries, rural residents can increase their incomes and improve their standard of living.
Many of the cooperative societies in Myanmar can be classified as micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises that have proliferated across the country. The government actively supports the development of these enterprises, both for domestic consumption and international trade. By fostering the growth of micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises and encouraging cooperation through cooperative societies, individual businesses can thrive, contributing to the overall progress of society.
Currently, there are over 38,000 cooperative societies operating at different levels throughout Myanmar. These cooperatives play a vital role in improving the socioeconomic conditions of their members and making significant contributions to the national economy. Although some cooperative societies may face challenges and undergo liquidation, new ones continue to emerge, reflecting the growing interest in utilizing cooperative measures to serve the interests of the people.
The people of Myanmar, along with the global community, eagerly anticipate the further development of cooperative societies in various sectors. These cooperative measures not only promote economic growth but also foster a more equitable and prosperous society. By harnessing the power of cooperation, Myanmar can achieve sustainable development and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
