During the Thingyan holidays, people who work in Yangon go back to their native towns.
Talking to the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM), Ma Myint Khine who works in Lanmadaw Township said, “Normal ticket fares from Yangon to Aunglan was K7,000 but the advance one rose to K25,000 on 10 April.”
She added, “Taxi fare is K20,000 from Lanmadaw to Aungmingala Coach Station, costing her over K40,000 to return to her hometown. Therefore, the ticket fares are a lot more expensive than the normal rate.”
Although the authorities concerned usually warn the highway bus lines not to charge more than the normal rate during the Thingyan holidays, the ground situation is always the opposite. — TWA/KZW
