Myanmar’s speciality coffee bean swells in a handsome amount of K10 million per tonne in foreign markets, according to the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization (MTPO).
The coffee bean of poor quality fetches about K5 million per tonne.
As per the remark made by the Union Minister of the Ministry of Commerce on 3 June, Myanmar’s coffee beans are mainly shipped to 14 foreign countries including England, the US, Japan, China, Thailand, and Australia.
Moreover, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and UAE offer import tariff exemption benefits for Myanmar’s coffee, according to MTPO.
At present, half of Myanmar’s coffee output goes to foreign countries. Myanmar’s speciality coffee beans are highly demanded in the global market due to the cultivation of pedigree coffee seed, value-added production and organic production.
The local consumption is also pretty high. Myanmar coffee association aims to meet a production target of 60,000 tonnes in 2030. Although Myanmar’s coffee enjoys high demand and good prices, high production costs pose a major challenge to export, said the association.
The stakeholders in the coffee supply chain including coffee bean growers, producers and roasters have been joining hands for Myanmar’s coffee to achieve speciality coffee with grade scores since 2014. Yet, they are facing a high input cost challenge for this perennial plant.
Shan State is the main producer of Myanmar’s coffee beans. They are also found in some regions and states. There are over 50,000 coffee plantation acres, with an annual yield of over 10,000 tonnes of coffee beans.
Myanmar’s coffee export bagged US$2.5 million per year, the association stated. — TWA/EM
