Myanmar-Thailand border trade value surpasses $1 bln over past two months

The value of Myanmar’s bilateral trade with the neighbouring country Thailand through the border amounted to US$1,037.665 million between 1 April and 16 June in the current financial year 2023-2024, the statistics issued by the Ministry of Commerce indicated. The figure is however down by $82.826 million compared to $1,120.491 million recorded in a year ago.
Myanmar conducts border trade with Thailand via Tachilek, Myawady, Kawthoung, Myeik, Htikhee and Mawtaung border posts. Majority of trade was carried out through Htikhee border among them, with $572.061 million.
Trade values stood at $389.859 million via Myawady, $43.106 million via Tachilek, $21.261 million via Myeik, $9.063 million via Kawthoung and $2.315 million via Mawtaung over the past two and half months.
Myanmar carries out border trade with the neighbouring countries Thailand, China, Bangladesh and India. It exports agricultural products, livestock, fisheries, minerals, forest products, finished goods and other goods, while capital goods, consumer goods, intermediate goods and raw materials by the CMP enterprises are brought into the country.
Thailand’s demand for Myanmar’s kitchen groceries (onion, rice powder, chili pepper) has risen as it resumed the tourism businesses in the post-COVID period and the restaurants and food businesses widely use them.
Fishery products are directly sent to Bangkok, Thailand through Mae Sot. The fast and fresh delivery service is the priority. There is a timely transport arrangement for the perishable green items like onion, chili pepper and cabbage at the border points.
The cloth roll, construction materials, industrial raw materials, pharmaceuticals, motorcycle parts, footwears, clothes, fruits, food products, cosmetics, gas, lubricants, household goods, feedstuff, bicycles, stationery, auto parts, tiles, feedstuff, fertilizer and electronic devices are imported.—NN/EM
