Approximately 1.8 million visses of onions (2,939 tonnes) from Seikphyu Township, Magway Region, were conveyed to domestic and foreign markets in July, according to the Trade Department under the Ministry of Commerce.
Seikphyu market is the main supplier of onion to Bayintnaung commodity centre in Yangon Region, Pyay’s depots in Bago Region, Pathein’s onion depots in Ayeyawady Region and Mawlamyine’s depots in Mon State. Then, the onions from Seikpyu are exported to China via Muse and Thailand via the Myawady border.
The prices of onion declined in early July and rebounded in the fourth week of July. The prices moved in the range between K1,900 and K2,025 per viss in the fourth week of July.
About 80 12-wheel truckloads of onions (800,000 visses) to Yangon’s Bayintnaung commodity centre, 33 lorries carrying 600,000 visses of onions to Myawady, four 12-wheel truckloads of onions (40,000 visses) to Muse, three 12-wheel truckloads of onions (30,000 visses) to Mawlamyine, 22 six-wheel truckloads of onions (150,000 visses) to Pyay, 24 six-wheel truckloads of onions (200,000 visses) were sent from Seikpyu area. — ASH/EM
