Myanmar is on an earnest journey towards democracy, a transformation that its people have long yearned for, primarily driven by the 2008 Constitution. This democratic evolution seeks to enhance the socioeconomic well-being of its citizens. Presently, the government is diligently laying the groundwork for a democratic and federal union, catering to the diverse needs of all ethnic groups within the nation.

Consequently, the people of Myanmar are perseveringly working towards establishing a democratic system that resonates with the very essence of democracy. By doing so, the new generations of Myanmar will enjoy the fruits of democratic practices and a nurturing environment guided by the four cardinal virtues. These virtues underscore the importance of unity, compassion, altruism, and self-reliance, fostering a spirit of mutual support to surmount any challenges that come their way.

This year’s International Day of Democracy theme, “Empowering the Next Generation”, places a spotlight on the pivotal role that young individuals play in advancing democracy. It underscores the necessity of including their voices in decisions that wield profound influence over their world.
The United Nations acknowledges that democracies globally face persistent threats such as unresolved conflicts, the escalating menace of climate change, and financial instability. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, on the International Day of Democracy, issues a sombre warning that “the walls are closing in on civic spaces”. He identifies the current proliferation of misinformation and disinformation as a corrosive influence, tainting public discourse, sowing division in communities, and eroding trust in institutions.
In the realm of democracy, the majority must prioritize the aspirations of the minority, and conversely, the minority must consider the desires of the majority. Both parties must diligently seek the most effective means to implement projects that benefit the nation. In a collective pursuit of brighter futures, decisions taken by both sides should not shatter any dreams but instead nurture them.
This approach paves the way for all ethnicities in Myanmar to transcend divergent viewpoints and establish a society founded on the principles of equity. UNESCO emphasizes that the International Day of Democracy serves as an occasion to assess the state of democracy globally. Democracy is not just a destination but an ongoing process. Only through comprehensive participation and support from the international community, national governing bodies, civil society, and individuals can the ideal of democracy be transformed into a tangible reality accessible to all, irrespective of location.
