Sugar price has slightly increased this month and it is still hard to say exactly, according to the market.
As Thingyan is approaching, the sugar price has climbed up by some hundreds of kyats and transportation difficulty is one of the factors for the price rise.
“Sugar price has also risen. It is hard to say exactly about the price because it differs among shops. Retail price has recently increased to K4,700 a viss, up from around K4,500 in early the month. Price of sugar and jaggery will rise when Thingyan is drawing near,” said Ko Nan Phya, a teashop owner from Shwepyitha township.
Although the price has been high now, it is expected to fall back after Thingyan, he said.
Myanmar exports sugar to Viet Nam mainly and offers from ASEAN countries including India, Bangladesh and Indonesia for purchase have been received. Total nationwide plantation of sugarcane is more than 430,000 acres and it is mainly grown in northern and southern Shan State, Sagaing Region and Bago Region. — Thit Taw/ZS/ED
