As Myanmar grapples with soaring temperatures surpassing typical summer heat due to El Nino’s influence, citizens, particularly the vulnerable, like children and the elderly, must brace themselves for the scorching weather ahead.
Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology diligently fulfils its responsibilities by disseminating weather forecasts through various channels, including its website and State-owned newspapers. These forecasts equip the public, including fishermen, with essential information to mitigate the impact of the sweltering summer conditions.
According to the department’s 10-day forecast, the South Andaman Sea and the South Bay of Bengal will experience partly cloudy to cloudy weather, while the North Andaman Sea and other areas of the Bay of Bengal may see a few clouds. This forecast necessitates preparedness among not just the general populace but also fishermen operating offshore and inshore trawlers during the specified period starting from 11 April.
Regarding rainfall patterns, the department predicts below-normal rain or thundershowers in various regions and states, including Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, and others. Taninthayi Region and certain states like Kachin, Kayin, and Mon are expected to have three to four rainy days, while others may experience fewer rainy days during this period.
During the El Nino phase, which has global repercussions, Myanmar is expected to witness day temperatures approximately 1.5°C higher than the April average in several regions and states. However, Kachin State is anticipated to have temperatures closer to the April average.
On 15 April, the department stated that whirled winds from the west and clouds from the east can bring raining in Sagaing, Kachin, Shan, Chin and Rakhine, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady, Taninthayi, Kayah, Kayin and Mon at different certainties from 17 to 23 April.
