Peace is the lifeblood of a country as well as development is of backbone for the improvement of a nation. It is because peace contributes to the development and prosperity of the nation. Likewise, development is a root cause for the restoration of peace in the country.
All the people aspire to enjoy the fruits of development in the restoration of peace in the country. Practically, peace encourages development measures in the country. Thanks to development measures, the peace of the nation will be long-term existence benefiting the entire people so as to enjoy the fruits of development. It can be seen that peace and development are interrelated.
Celebrated every 10 November, the World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in the daily lives of the global people.
The World Science Day for Peace and Development set by the United Nations General Assembly indicates the important role of peace and development for global countries and their peoples. In this regard, the countries and the people suffering the bitter experiences of lack of peace and development can thoroughly understand the taste of peace and development.
The significant day helps create the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organizing their own event or activity on the day.
‘The applications of basic sciences are vital for advances in medicine, industry, agriculture, water resources, energy planning, environment, communications and culture’, affirmed the United Nations General Assembly on 2 December 2021, when it endorsed the proposal for an International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development. Marking such a day is contributing to the Year 2022 by celebrating this theme.

Such a significant day aims to strengthen public awareness of the role of science in peaceful and sustainable societies, to promote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries, to renew national and international commitment to the use of science for the benefit of societies and to draw attention to the challenges faced by science in raising support for the scientific endeavour.
