Bean growers reap handsome profit of K600,000 per acre this year

The growers of black gram and green gram are making a great profit of K600,000 per acre early this year, said bean growers.
Before the cultivation, land treatment equipment costs K40,000 for two times. The price of the seed is estimated at K70,000-100,000 per basket. The growers spend around K200,000 for land nutrients and K140,000 for 35 wage workers per acre. The cost for the harvester is K25,000 per acre. The yield is about 20 baskets per acre.
The cultivation cost is approximately K600,000 per acre of black gram and green gram. In early March 2023, the prices of both black gram and green gram were around K600,000 per basket. We can reap a profit of K600,000 per acre after deducting cultivation and production cost, said a grower from the Kyaunggon area.
The pigeon pea can be grown under the mixed-cropping system. They are resistant to extreme weather and their straws can be used as fuel. Additionally, the price of pigeon peas is higher than that of black gram. Those growers also receive a handsome profit like other pulses, Soe Win, a grower of pigeon peas from Kyintha village in Meiktila Township told the Global New Light of Myanmar.
Mixed cropping involving pigeon peas and sesame crops saves nearly half of the agricultural input costs. So, the cultivation cost of pigeon peas is cheaper than that of black gram. About 10-15 baskets are produced per acre with rainfed agriculture.
On 4 March 2023, the prices stood at K1,875,000 per tonne of black gram, K2,174,000 per tonne of pigeon pea (red gram) and K2,330-2,420 per viss of green gram and K3,915 per tonne of green gram (Shwe Wah variety) from the Kayan area in the Yangon market.
