A ceremony to provide cash assistance for construction of a shelter-cum-school in Chaungtha was held at the meeting hall of the Ayeyawady Region government in Pathein yesterday.
The construction of the shelter-cum-school in Chaungtha was funded by the committee.
Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye, in his capacity as the Vice Chairman of the National Natural Disaster Management Committee, has called for stepping up preparedness against natural disasters as the rainy season is approaching.
The COVID-19 is deemed to spread easily during the rainy season. Therefore, individual precautionary measures for preventing the spread of the coronavirus should be practiced, said Dr Win Myat Aye.
Natural disasters including strong wind, storm, and flood are occurring across the world due to climate change. If natural disasters occur, safety of the people is of vital importance, the Union Minister added.
The National Natural Disaster Management Committee chose the most needed places across the country for the safety of people, and has built shelters with the use of K 29 billion since 2016. So far a total of 233 buildings had been constructed.
The new building can be used as a school, as a cyclone shelter, or as a venue for community-based activities he added.
He also urged the local people to cooperate in using the building effectively and maintaining it for the long-term as the building was constructed with the people’s budgets managed by the government.
Locals and officials accepted the K 267.525 million cash provided by the Union Minister and party.
On behalf of the people in Chaungtha, a local resident expressed thanks to the government for cash assistance.
