The Lawkanat Art Gallery in Kyauktada Township, Yangon Region, will host a cartoon exhibition from 27 to 31 January to commemorate the 100th birthday of an esteemed cartoonist. Organized by Win Aung and others, the exhibition showcases a collection of cartoons, magazine cover paintings, and memorabilia belonging to Cartoonist Pe Thein.
Win Aung explained, “31 January marks cartoon Sayagyi Pe Thein’s birthday. To honour his centenary, his disciple cartoonists, in consultation with his family, have arranged this special event. Visitors can enjoy Pe Thein’s cartoons, paintings, and momentos throughout the exhibition period.”
Born to Shwe Pyi Taw U Ba Tin and Daw Kyawt Sein in Pantanaw on 31 January 1924, U Pe Thein was the second of six sibling. He enrolled at Yangon University in 1946 and became involved in cartooning, initially contributing to the “Oway” magazine in 1947 under the mentorship of U Ba Gyan. U Pe Thein’s career spanned decades; he passed away in June 2009 at 86.
Renowned for his artistic talent, U Pe Thein also served as vice-chairman of the Myanmar Artists Council in 1963 and earned the title of Mawgun (second class). — ASH/TKO
