Statement on Ceasefire and Eternal Peace

1. The Tatmadaw issued a statement on 9 May 2020 in line with the international standards to enforce a ceasefire in the areas from 10 May to 31 August 2020, except in the areas where terrorist groups declared by the government take positions. The statement was aimed for effectively and rapidly carrying out containment, prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in Myanmar and restoring eternal peace, as well as the participation of the Tatmadaw in control measures of this disease with might and main for the interest of the country and the national affairs.
2. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the United Nations on 23 March 2020 urged all groups to stop armed conflicts throughout the world, and his Appeal for Global Ceasefire was also released. In support to this appeal, the UN Security Council made a decision on 1 July 2020, calling for a halt to ceasefire of relevant groups in armed conflicts at least 90 days and to participating in COVID-19 control measures in providing humanitarian assistance amid COVID-19 outbreak. As a member country of the United Nations, Myanmar is also responsible for adhering to following international practices and the UN decision like other countries.
3. The Tatmadaw will continuously strive for control measures of COVID-19 in carrying out the interest of the country and the national affairs in its duties. For effective measures against this disease and for successful implementation of Union Accord Part III signed at the 4th session of Union Peace Conference—21st Century Panglong, the Tatmadaw will extend the period of military operations from 1 to 30 September 2020, except in the areas where terrorist groups declared by the government take positions.
