Nay Pyi Taw, 29 June — The national parliament will make amendments to separate powers of regions and states to give greater autonomy and self-determination to national races, Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann said during a meeting at the Sagaing Region Hluttaw in Monywa on Sunday.
The constitutional amendments recognize the desire for equality and decentralization, and the appointment of chief ministers by region or state Hluttaw from among elected representatives, the speaker told local people who attended the meeting.
The Lower House speaker called for help in ensuring the stability during the lead-up to, and staging of, the general election likely in early November. He also called on candidates from political parties to adhere to the codes of conduct set by the Election Commission for free and fair elections.
The speaker also met with local people in ChaungU and Myaung in Sagaing Region and TadaU in Mandalay Region on Saturday. MNA
