Myanmar’s Shan United is placed in Group F of the 2023-2024 season of the AFC Cup Championship, following the drawing-lots event held on 24 August.
The Asian Football Confederation will hold the tournament divided by zone, and Myanmar club Shan United will compete in the ASEAN zone.
According to the Asian Football Confederation, there will be three groups in the West Asia zone, three groups in the ASEAN zone, and one group each in the South Asia zone, East Asia zone, and Central zone.
Group F sees Myanmar’s Shan United FC, Dynamic Herb Cebu FC of the Philippines, Macarthur FC of Australia and Phnom Penh Crown FC of Cambodia while Group G features Malaysia’s Terengganu FC, Bali United of Indonesia, Philippines Stallion Laguna FC and Central Coast Mariners of Australia.
Vietnamese Haiphong FC, Hougang United of Singapore, Malaysia’s Sabah FC and Indonesia’s PSM Makassar will be vying for Group H.
The group matches will be held in a home-and-away format from September to December. According to the format of the tourney, the top three teams from the three ASEAN zone groups and the best one of the second-placed teams (four teams in total) will be allowed to participate in the ASEAN zone semi-finals.
Shan United is expected to struggle to advance to the next stage according to the group position. Shan Team has the opportunity to compete in the AFC Cup for the fourth time. Two Myanmar clubs have been allowed to compete in this season’s AFC Cup, but Yangon United failed to qualify in the group stage. — Ko Nyi Lay/KZL
