Surge in onion prices detected at Bayintnaung market

The price of onion peaked at K3,100 per viss on 21 August at Yangon’s Bayintnaung wholesale market despite an influx of 150,000 visses of onions, Ko Swe, a seller at Nyaungpinlay market, who daily comes to buy the onions at Bayintnaung market, told the Global New Light of Myanmar.
The prices range between K2,500 and K3,150 per viss of onions depending on sizes and producing areas on 21 August 2023, which increased from K2,200 per viss on 24 July.
The prices stood at K2,150-2,700 per viss in the corresponding period last year. Yet, the price jumped to K3,100 per viss on 23 August 2022.
Both the Yangon market and depots in onion-producing areas see the price rise.
The traders are preparing to send the onions to the Myawady border as road repair is being undertaken. Some traders are buying them for the Chinese market. — TWA/EM
