If tourism booms amid the current proliferation of cafes, coffee drinking culture and job opportunities can be promoted, said U Ye Myint, patron of the Myanmar Coffee Association.
Coffee harvesting season in Myanmar is from November to February every year and coffee is exported to 12 countries including China, Thailand, the US, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, France and Germany, in the period from April to May, he said.
“Coffee shops are quite a current trend now. If the tourism sector is open, both coffee drinking culture and employment opportunities can be enhanced,” U Ye Myint explained.
The Myanmar Coffee Association participates in the annual World Speciality Coffee Conference & Exhibition, sponsered by the Speciality Coffee Association of Japan, to showcase Myanmar’s world class coffee.
Myanmar grows about 50,000 acres of coffee, including 38,000 acres of Arabica, which is exported to the global market, and 12,000 acres of Robusta, according to the Department of Agriculture.
Coffee plantations can be found in Mandalay region, Shan state and Kayin state in Myanmar.
