Zalun sesame area to increase to 70 acres this year as export demand rises

According to sesame traders, sesame cultivation in Zalun township will be expanded to 70 acres in response to growing export demand.

Seeds for these 70 acres will be provided by the State’s economic fund under the contract farming of the Department of Agriculture.

“As the sesame demand from China rises, we are educating and encouraging farmers to cultivate. For their seed requirement, the Department of Agriculture is carrying out after connecting with Nay Pyi Taw. We are also helping by providing technology and inputs for 70 acres in Zalun,” said an official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

In the domestic market during this week, the price of black sesame (Samone) is stable with K 350,000 – K 390,000 per 45 viss, while those of white sesame (ordinary), white sesame (Japan)and brown sesame are K 360,000 – K 380,000, K 400,000 – K 405,000 and K 310,000- K 315000 respectively, with a decrease of K 5000- K 10000 per bag, according to Mandalay wholesalers.
