Just 7.87 per cent of eligible voters checked their names on the electoral roll for 2017 By-elections in Yangon Region, said Yangon Region Election Commission Secretary U Tin Win yesterday.
“The number of eligible voters who checked the electoral roll is very low compared with total eligible voters. Maybe because of our door-to-door collection of eligible voters,” said U Tin Win.
Out of more than 990,000 eligible voters in Yangon Region, just over 70,000 voters had come and checked the electoral roll by 13 February. There are 19 vacant seats nationwide: three in Amyotha Hluttaw, nine in Pyithu Hlutaw and seven in region/state hluttaws.
In Yangon Region, the candidates will contest in 11 townships: Kamayut, Kyimyindine, Seikan, Latha, Hlaing, Lanmadaw, Ahlon, Hlinethaya, Dagon Myothit Seikkan, Dagon Myothit (East) and Kawhmu. The by-election is slated to be held on 1st April.
