Myanmar teams participating AFC Cup to set new format

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is planning to change the format of the AFC Cup, which is a football tournament of Asia in which Myanmar football clubs participating.
The new format will come into force starting from next year, Asian football authorities said.
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, it is not possible to hold the AFC Cup in the same way as before. It will no longer be a long-distance event including home and away basic, but a one-way system, officials added.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has decided to host all matches in the 2022 AFC Cup tourney at once, with group matches being chosen by the host country for each group.
Myanmar clubs will compete in the ASEAN Zone, and champion teams from each group will be able to compete directly from the group stage and the runners-up will compete in the play-offs.
The 2022 AFC Cup ASEAN Zone pre-match will be held on 22 April.
The play-off stage will be held on 17 May and group stage from 24 to 30 June.
The ASEAN Zone semi-finals will be held on 9 and 10 August and the final on 23 and 24 August.
Champion team of ASEAN Zone will advance to the finals, with the semi-finals taking place in September and the final in October.
The AFC Cup was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 during the group stages, and this year the ASEAN zone matches and other zone matches have been cancelled.
This year, Myanmar football clubs Shan United and Hantharwaddy United were allowed to compete but withdrew before the ASEAN Zone matches were cancelled. Myanmar clubs have been allowed to compete in the AFC Cup since 2012.
From 2012 to 2016, one Myanmar team from the group stage was allowed to compete directly while another team is eligible to compete in the play-offs.—Ko Nyi Lay/GNLM
