New quality strains essential for agricultural development


Nay Pyi Taw, 14 June — Development of agricultural sector in Myanmar depends a lot on availability of quality seeds and researches on the currently cultivating seeds play an important role too.
Therefore, Myanmar has formed the National Committee for Quality Seeds Production to set up the national seed policy, to exchange quality seeds with international community, to cooperate in seed research with governments, international organizations, local organization and private entrepreneurs, to issue certificates to recognize new strain seeds and distribution, export and import of seeds that have been recognized by the national seed committee.
At present, farmers and researchers have applied for official recognition of three hybrid paddy strains, eight high-yield paddy strains, nine maize strains, four sweet corn strains, four corn strains, one peanut strain, one sugar cane strain, one long cotton strain, 12 tomato strains and many other new vegetable strains.
