Pulses market forecasts low prices for new green grams in harvest season

When new black grams and pigeon peas are offered at high prices with advance purchases, the price of new green grams is bound to decline during the harvest season.
The traders are closely paying attention to the market prices. According to the pulses market forecast, the costs will likely hit K90,000 per basket of new pigeon peas and K85,000 per basket of black grams from delta regions in the upcoming harvest times.
The green gram produced from the Yangon Region is expected to be offered K60,000 per basket, growers from the Kayan area told The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
The pulses prices were registered at K2.9275 million per tonne of black gram (Fair Average Quality), K3.1675 million per tonne of black gram (Special Quality), K3.1 million per tonne of pigeon pea (red gram), K2,500-K2,570 per viss of green gram from the Pakokku area and K3,665 per viss of green gram (Shwewah) on 8 December 2023.
The prevailing prices surged from K2,830-K3,000 per viss of green gram (Shwewah), K1.75 million per tonne of black grams (FAQ) and K1.835 million per tonne of pigeon pea on 8 December 2022. The figures showed an increase of K1.2 million per tonne for black grams, K1.3 million for pigeon peas and K200,000 for green grams.
The FOB prices were set at US$1,010-$1,030 per tonne of black gram (FAQ), $1,110-$1,130 per tonne of black gram (SQ), $1,120-$1,140 per tonne of pigeon pea, $690-$710 per tonne of green gram from central Myanmar regions and $870-$900 per tonne of green gram (Shwewah) then.
Black gram price dipped to K2.98 million per tonne on 6 December, yet the pigeon pea price remained unchanged.
Green gram (Shwewah) varieties from the Kayan area touch the highest. There are around 300,000 acres of green gram (Shwewah) in Yangon Region and a hundred thousand acres in Kayan Township.
The cultivation cost is K600,000 per acre, and the yield rate is estimated at 15 baskets per acre.
This month, the high-grade green gram (Shwewah) from the Kayan area is K70,000 per basket. — TWA/KK
