As the frequency of small-scale earthquakes continues to rise within the country, earthquake experts are sounding the alarm for increased vigilance regarding the movement of the Sagaing Fault, a significant fault line traversing Myanmar.
The Sagaing fault line is a major geological fault that spans over 1,200 kilometres, running between the Sundar (Sunda) rock mass and the Indian rock mass. It passes through various regions, including Mandalay, Yamethin, Pyinmana, Nay Pyi Taw, Toungoo, and Bago.
Given its history of significant seismic activity, densely populated towns and villages situated along the Sagaing fault line must exercise caution. Notably, Yangon and Mandalay, which are located in close proximity to the fault line and characterized by numerous high-rise buildings, require heightened awareness of earthquake risks.
In response, the Myanmar Earthquake Committee has issued a warning, urging authorities to conduct structural assessments of these high-rise structures to ensure their resilience against potential earthquakes.
As seismic activity continues, it is crucial to prioritize monitoring the movement of the Sagaing fault line and implement necessary measures to safeguard the communities residing in its vicinity. — Htun Htun/KZW
