The Myanma Railways (MR) expanded its rush hour train services on the Yangon Circular Railway as of 18 May (today), according to the MR’s regional transports Assistant General Manager U Zaw Lwin.
Three trains will be added to the Yangon Circular Railway for rush hours and all circular trains including three added trains will run 40 rounds a day, he added.
The expansion of rush hours train services at the circular railway has been arranged to meet the social-distancing guidelines issued by Ministry of Health and Sports.
The MR’s assistant general manager also said, “There are five trains running on the circular railway making 28 rounds a day. We didn’t meet the social-distancing guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Sports during the rush hours. Therefore, more trains will be added to the lines as of 18 May, which is a Monday when offices and works are open.”
On the circular railway, five trains run 28 rounds a day, and there were about 7,000 commuters per day during the COVID-19 period.
The added three trains will run on Yangon-Hlawgar, Yangon-Mingaladon, and Yangon-Toe Gyaung Kalay-Oakphosu routes.
For Yangon-Hlawgar route, the new train departs from Hlawgar station at 7:20am and arrives at the Yangon Central Railway Station at 9 am in the morning. In the evening, the train departs from the Yangon Central Railway Station at 6pm and arrives at Hlawgar station at 7:40pm.
For Insein-Mingaladon-Yangon route, the train departs from Insein station at 7:25am, Mingaladon at 8:10am and arrived at the Yangon Central Railway Station at 9:15am. In the evening, the train departs from the Yangon Central Railway Station at 5:45pm, arrives in Mingaladon at 6:50pm and arrives at Insein station at 7:35pm.
For Yangon-Toe Gyaung Kalay-Oakphosu route, the new train departs from Oakphosu at 7:35am and arrives at the Yangon Central Railway Station at 9:10am. In the evening, the train departs from the Yangon Central Railway Station at 5:50pm and arrives at Oakphosu station at 7:25pm.
As one more train was added to the Yangon-Hlawgar route, there will be three trains departing from Hlawgar in the morning. The three trains arrive at the Yangon Central Railway Station at 15 minutes intervals.
The two trains including a new train departing from Insein on the Insein-Mingaladon-Yangon route, arrive at the Yangon Central Railway Station at 20 minutes intervals.
Only two trains previously ran on the Yangon-Toe Gyaung Kalay-Oakphosu route. Now it has three trains. The three trains departing from Oakphosu arrive at the Yangon Central Railway Station at 10 minutes interval for the first two trains and 20 minutes interval for the last two trains.
Before COVID-19 outbreak, a total of 21 trains on the Yangon Circular Railways operate 168 rounds a day carrying about 50,000 passengers. —Nyunt Ko Ko(Translated by Kyaw Zin Tun)
