UNESCO and Myanmar journalists commemorate the World Press Freedom Day-2018 in Yangon yesterday.
The ceremony was opened with an address by Head of UNESCO in Myanmar Ms. Min Jeong Kim.
This year’s global theme is ‘Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law’, and will focus on issues of media and the transparency of the political process, the independence and media literacy of the judicial system, and the accountability of state institutions towards the public.
The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres in his message for WPF day makes a call to governments to strengthen press freedom, and to protect journalists.
U Swe Win, Chief Editor of Myanmar Now news agency, and Managing Director of Myanmar ICT Daw Htike Htike Aung-MIDO gave remarks on media situation in Myanmar.
Following the ceremony, a talks titled “Media, Justice and the Rule of Law” was held at the same venue to mark the World Press Freedom Day.
Dr. Maung Maung San, Member of the Myanmar Media Council, U Htein Win, Legal Adviser of the Mandalay Rule of Law Centre, U Kyaw Min Swe, the Chief Editor of the Voice Journal, Ma Thida (Sanchaung), member of the Board of Pen International and U Than Zaw Aung, Vice Chairman of the Myanmar Lawyers Network for Media took part in the talks.
Pen Myanmar also released a report on press freedom in Myanmar at the ceremony.
