Users fined for electricity theft in Mandalay

ILLEGAL electricity users in Mandalay will be fined an amount equal to 12 months of power use calculated on average monthly billing if found guilty of committing power theft, according to an official from Mandalay Electric Corporation.
Inspections have been carried out in Pyigyi Dagun Township, which has seen a huge spike in power over the last two weeks, said General Manager U Soe Lwin, adding that most Mandalay industry is located in the area.
It is reported that ten people who were caught stealing electricity from the grid have been fined the aforementioned 12 month sum. The fine is calculated for a period of one year before the date of conviction.
U Maun Maun Oo, secretary of the industrial zone management committee, confirmed that surprise checks have been conducted on factories in industrial zones.
“Businesspeople are afraid of being electrocuted – it is not easy to commit power theft. It is possible to steal electricity from a municipal electricity point if someone demonstrates how to,” said the secretary.—Aung Thant Khaing
