23.14 tons of ‘ownerless’ illegal timber seized in Katha Tsp

image 72The authorities seized 23.14 tons of ‘ownerless’ illegally harvested teak logs and lumber on the evening of 16 May near the Ayeyarwady River in Laybothar village, Katha Township, Sagaing Region.
Acting on a tip, teams led by U Myint Naing Oo, the assistant director of Katha District Forest Department, and U Tun Tun Naing, the head of the Township Forest Department, searched the area near the river and found 23.14 tons of illegal timber, including 46 teak pillars weighing 6.302 tons, 82 teak logs weighing 12.86 tons, 163 pieces of lumber weighing 3.1 tons, 20 pieces of timber of varying sizes, weighing 0.4 tons, and 30 pieces of hardwood weighing 0.45 tons. The seized timber is estimated to be worth more than K3.8 million.
