Relief supplies stockpiled in case of natural disasters in Mandalay

Relief supplies have been stockpiled to provide in the event of natural disasters in Mandalay Region, according to the region Disaster Management Department.
The supplies are stockpiled at nine townships and five districts as well as the region department with readiness for 2,550 households in the region. Official of the Mandalay Region Disaster Management Department U Aye Min Thu said many natural disasters are caused by overflow of rivers, adding a good preparation leads to a good response which will reduce the intensity of the disaster.
He urged the people to work together with relevant departments and administrative bodies to build a resilient society. In addition, the Region Fire Services Department is responsible for fire safety as well as natural disasters, search and rescue operations.
“There is a risk of floods right now, and search and rescue operations as well as public welfare measures are underway according to the situation of the Ayeyawady River,” said Head of Pyigyidagun Township Fire Services Department U Kyaw Kyaw Oo.
The department is preparing itself to be ready for performing search and rescue works with the use of speed boats depending on the Ayeyawady River, he added.
In case of a fire or natural disaster, people are urged to notify to the Fire Department by reaching at 191. In the 2019-2020 Fiscal Year, there were 304 times of natural disasters in the Mandalay Region alone, causing nearly 640 million kyats in damage, and about 390 million kyats were able to be provided to the local people.—Maung Aye Chan/GNLM
