The dried tea leaves from the Homalin area in the Khamti District of the Sagaing Region are being sold for nearly K5,000 per viss, said Daw Su Su Htway, township the head of the Agriculture Department from Homalin Township.
“Currently, the price of dried tea leaves is nearly K5,000 per viss in the local market.
The dried tea leaves price is getting high these days. The dried tea leaves from Homalin township is bitter and people are love to consume them,” she continued.
Last year, the dried tea leaves prices were fetched K4,500 per viss in Homalin township. But this year, people are selling them for nearly K5,000 per viss.
The dried tea leaves from Homalin township are conveyed to Kalay, Tamu, Mawlaik, Monywa and Mandalay markets.
During the 2021-22 financial year, the tea leaves have been cultivated in the Sagaing region since June 2021. Currently, the agriculture department cultivated 290 acres of tea leaves in Mawlaik, 9,694 acres in Khamti, 911 acres in the Naga region, 487 acres in Katha, 564 acres in Kawlin districts, according to the Sagaing Region Agriculture Department.
The experts from the relevant township Agriculture Department is providing agriculture techniques to farmers for improving high yield. During the COVID-19 period, the staff from Sagaing Region Agriculture Department are being trained online with experts from the head office, according to the Sagaing Region Agriculture Department.
There are some 8,900 hectares of tea planted across Myanmar and most of them were exported to China market. Although local tea is exported to Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore, the largest market remains China. — Lu Lay/GNLM
