LOCAL demand for bamboo is gradually strong although the prices of the bamboo-based products are high in domestic market, bamboo producers in Yedashe Township in Bago Region.
Based on the size, the current prices of a bamboo are worth between Ks350 and Ks700.
The rise in transportation charges after monsoon period is a major cause why the prices of bamboo have steadily increased in the market.
Bamboo traders in the township usually use river route for transportation in the wet season at a fair price. However, they transport the forest product by cargo trucks in the rest seasons at a higher price.
Bamboo produced from the forest of the Bago mountain range is marketable forest items. Bamboo is widely used to make bed, chair and other kinds of furniture and traditional materials.
Among others, bamboo chair and bed are selling well in the village, said one of sellers residing in Shwethbyay Village beside Yangon-Mandalay Road, who sells a bamboo chair for Ks5,000 but Ks500 will be deducted when buyer purchases a couple of chair.
The price of bamboo bed is Ks5,000 this year, an increase of Ks1,500 compared with the similar period last year, the seller said.
In Yadashe Township, bamboo product manufacturing is a mainly business of Hsihsongon, Shwethabyay and Myaukhlwetkon villages. The number of local women engaged in the firms is higher than men.
