Speaker of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann said that democratization process would be completed only when people join hands with the government and Hluttaw, while meeting with the local farmers in Ayeyawady region Monday to discuss about land utilization and rural development programmes.
The forum was held at Pathein, capital of Ayeyawady region, with attendance of more than 5,000 farmers from the districts of Pathein, Hinthada, Maubin, Pyapon, Myaungmya and Labutta. This was the first forum on the affairs of farmers during the term of present government.
Thura U Shwe Mann said, “The meeting is more informative and meaningful than expected ever before. The regional government has helped establish garment factories for livelihood of residents. With an increase in population, there will be a shortage of land areas for the next generation of farmers. Therefore, these industrial jobs could help provide employment opportunities for the locals.”
The forum emphasized on agricultural loans, protection of farmers’ rights, their livelihoods and law enforcement for the farmers.
About 74 percent of the people in the Ayeyawady region are engaged in agriculture to secure their livelihood.
