Traffic police and relevant organizations checked whether pedestrians and those in vehicles wore face masks while going outside along Anawrahta Road in Kyauktada Township, Yangon, yesterday. Police Captain Win Htay of Traffic Police Force (41), Kyauktada Township, said they worked together with local residents to disseminate health information to passersby, vehicle drivers and riders but their main task is to check if people are wearing face masks when going outside. He said they give out free masks to those who don’t have one, inquire their destination and reason for going outside, and explain the health guidelines issued by the Union Government.
Daw Htay Htay Yi, administrator of Kyauktada Township’s ward-3, said some people will take off their masks thinking it’s safe because either there are not many people or they are travelling in vehicles while some don’t wear it at all because it makes breathing difficult for them. Mask checks and health information sharing began on 13 April, especially in Kyauktada Township as it has the highest number of people travelling through it.—Zaw Gyi (Translated by Zaw Htet Oo)
