SAC Member DPM MoTC UM addresses 64th Anniversary of World Meteorological Day

State Administration Council Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo attended the 64th World Meteorological Day event at Transport and Communications Ministry in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday, along with deputy ministers and high-ranking officials from relevant ministries.
The Union minister emphasized that this year’s WMD theme, “At the frontline of climate action”, underscores the critical importance of addressing climate change. Extreme weather events have inflicted widespread damage globally, disproportionately affecting developing nations and island countries.
He also mentioned that 2023 was the hottest year in 174 years and that 2024 could be even hotter, quoting the statistics of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This rise in temperature has accelerated the melting of glaciers, contributing to the expansion of ocean surfaces.
He urged for collaboration between governments and citizens to mitigate the impacts of abnormal climate change and its dire consequences. Additionally, he shared the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology’s efforts in utilizing technical advancements and fostering cooperation with partner countries to improve forecasting capabilities.
After his remarks, attendees viewed a message video from WMO Secretary-General Professor Celeste Saulo and a clip addressing climate change. Subsequently, the Union Minister presented awards to the first, second, and third winners in the climate change essay competition.
In the afternoon, staff members of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Education discussed 15 research papers on meteorology, hydrology and seismology. — MNA/NT
