ALTHOUGH traditional farming techniques are gradually fading in some rural areas as farmers replace them with modern, mechanical techniques, farmers across the Bagan heritage zone are preserving agricultural traditions, much to the pleasure of international tourists.
“We prefer the natural landscapes of Bagan and its traditional farming, string puppet toys and traditional handicrafts,” said an American visitor who also plans to visit Taunggyi and Inle Lake in Shan State to photograph the traditional lifestyles of Myanmar’s various ethnic communities.
One farmer in the Bagan area, situated in the Nyaung U District of Mandalay Region, said groups of tourists often visit local farms to observe and photograph traditional farming methods.
According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, tourist arrivals in Mandalay are expected to hit 5 millions this year.
