UNION Minister for Health Dr Than Aung called for a joint effort from government and non-government organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) in improving the treatment of eye conditions in Myanmar yesterday.
He made the remarks during the opening ceremony of an event to mark World Sight Day in Nay Pyi Taw.
The theme for World Sight Day this year is ‘Universal Eye Health, Eye Care for All.’
Early tests and treatments, as well as lifestyle factors, play an important role in preventing many types of eye diseases, the minister said.  He added that as much as 80 percent of the global cases of blindness are preventable or curable, but that greater efforts and funding must be invested.
Afterwards, Resident Representatives of WHO Dr J.M. Luna gave a speech at the ceremony, which was also attended by directors-generals from the Ministry of Health.—Myanmar News Agency
